Work on the new skatepark at Guppey Park is set to begin this week.

Recreation Director Gary Bannon updated the Recreation Advisory Board about the construction plans at its June 12 meeting. Bannon told the board that depending on the timing of construction, he was hopeful for a September dedication. The construction area will be fenced off until the project is complete.

Previous site work occurred at Guppey Park to prepare for the skatepark during the fall and spring; light poles were also installed.

In 2021, the City Council awarded the bid to construct the first phase of the skatepark to Artisan Skateparks of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, for a cost not to exceed $500,000. As envisioned, the skatepark would include three elements, the main skate park, a skate bowl, and a BMX pump track. The skate park will be built first, followed by the bowl and pump track in a future phase, as funding allows.
