National Public Works Week is observed annually during the third full week of May, which this year is May 21 through 27. It’s a time to reflect and recognize the importance of public works in an organized society and shed light on the essential role that public works employees play in society.
Public works help keep communities strong by providing an infrastructure of services in transportation, water, wastewater, and stormwater treatment, public buildings and spaces, parks and grounds, solid waste, and right-of-way management. They are what make communities great places to live and work.
“Our public works crews are the silent, unsung heroes of the community,” said Dover’s Community Services Director John Storer. “They are called into action at any time of day, any day of the year, to maintain and fix critical infrastructure that provides safe drinking water, a sanitary sewer system, and clear and safe roads – the lifeblood of our community. Please join me in thanking our dedicated crews.”
The American Public Works Association has celebrated National Public Works Week since 1960. The theme for this year’s celebration is, Connecting the World Through Public Works. Public works is the thread that connects the community throughout the world. Public works professionals strive to improve the quality of life for the community they serve, leading to healthier, happier communities.
