City of Dover: Dover Public Library presents: Nellie Brown Mitchell: Dover's Renowned African American Soprano

City of Dover issued the following announcement on February 18.

Join the Dover Public Library virtually on Thursday, February 24 at 6:30 p.m. for a presentation on the life of Nellie Brown Mitchell by Dennis Britton, Trustee of the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail Board.

Ms. Brown Mitchell, born in Dover in 1845, was known as "one of Boston's favorite cantatrices." Having studied at the New England Conservatory, she is one of the first African American classically trained musicians. This presentation will cover Mitchell's early days in Dover, her concerts throughout New England, her touring of southern states, and her entrepreneurship as a teacher and inventor.
