City of Dover issued the following announcement on March 11.
The Parking Commission will consider providing recommendations on the use of public parking spaces for commercial use to the City Manager and City Council at its meeting Tuesday, March 15.
Earlier this week, the Parking Commission met for a special meeting where through an informal 4 to 3 vote, it voted to support the use of public parking spaces for outdoor dining. Following the vote, the commission discussed what should be included in regulations, such as when spaces could be used, cost, application procedures and accessibility issues.
If the Parking Commission votes to recommend using public parking spaces, the proposal would then go to the City Council for its consideration and approval.
The city had allowed city-owned parking spaces for outdoor dining for the past two years during the COVID-19 pandemic, which first began when indoor dining was banned by the governor and continued when the governor imposed indoor capacity limits, which have since been lifted. The use of public sidewalks for outdoor dining was previously allowed.
