PORTSMOUTH – The powerful images of equine photographer Susan Irene Correia will be on display during the month of April at the New Hampshire Art Association’s Levy Gallery.
Residing in the Seacoast New Hampshire area, Correia’s work reflects her knowledge of a horse’s movement, their expressions, and the joy in the human relationship with these beautiful animals.
Her lifetime love, personal and professional experiences with horses has created her devotion to capturing the spirit of the horse in her photography.
Corriea received her BS degree from Northern Vermont University in Lyndonville, Vt. She has spent most of her professional career in corporate compliance management in financial services while juggling her equine photojournalism and private client photography work.
Her equine photography travels have taken her to Canada, Portugal, and France, as well as some of the best equine venues in this country. She is the official show photographer for many United States Dressage Federation national shows.
Correia’s body of work, “Power – Dance with Beauty, Play with Abandon, Be Loved,” was curated and presented as a 15-piece solo exhibit earlier this year at the Griffin Museum in Boston. It will now be a featured exhibit at the NHAA in April.
Many years of owning horses and being part of the horse world, has given Correia a well-rounded education in the technicality of the powerful movements of the horse.
Earning but not demanding the horse’s respect and the gift of seeing their spirit has given her the ability to use this knowledge from behind the lens. Her experience in dressage sharpens her eye to the correct movement and appreciation of the resulting muscling of the body.
Her exhibit entitled “Power” subtitles to three related areas.
The first is “Dance with Beauty”. In this grouping, Correia strives to show the power and beauty in dressage. Dressage – “the dancing of the horse” is regarded by many to present the ultimate use of the horse in a traditional centuries old discipline.
The second area of work subtitled, “Play with Abandon,” recognizes the power of the horse’s body at play. These works reflect on her belief that although we may ask of the horse to be a partner in work under saddle, all horses deserve the ability to be live and play with abandon. Twirling, whirling, jumping at shadows and playing with light dominate this display.
Her last subtitle is “Be Loved” and is purposely represented with a singular piece. Here the artist asks consideration that while these artistic photographs of beauty may elicit admiration, the viewer should pause to consider the horse’s fragility in today’s society.
