COAST celebrates 40 years on the road

COAST is celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2022, and they are laying out a plan for success for another 40 years.

Over the past 40 years, COAST has been a central part of ensuring that the Seacoast region has the public transportation services it needs to thrive economically and socially. With the community's support and action, COAST looks forward to what can be accomplished over the next decade and beyond.

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit public transportation agency, they are stewards of public funding and the public’s trust: COAST’s annual $6.78M budget is funded through a blend of appropriated federal funds and state and local dollars, with additional revenue generated through passenger fares, advertising revenues, and partnership agreements.

In New Hampshire, today’s public transportation landscape is being shaped in a variety of ways;

  • by the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,
  • a dwindling pool of commercial drivers,
  • rising inflation and costs,
  • a funding model that is subject to the annual shifts in budget priorities, and
  • specific to COAST, an operations and maintenance facility that has reached the end of its useful life.
And yet, COAST’s team of long-time dedicated staff persists and even thrives by being responsive, adaptable, and customer-focused.

Driving Towards the Future: A Maintenance Facility for the Next 40 Years

COAST’s ability to achieve its mission rests upon having a fleet of well-maintained and safe vehicles. The current maintenance and operations facility at 42 Sumner Drive in Dover, NH is now insufficiently sized, reaching the end of its expected lifespan, and needs replacement. Based on a lengthy planning and input process, COAST has embarked on a plan to build a new facility on its current property.

COAST has enjoyed tremendous success over the first 40 years. The new facility will ensure there is an adequate facility for the next 40+ years of successes.
